Education Schedule offered by the Hill Country Home Builders Association

The Hill Country Home Builders Association is offering NAHB approved courses leading to certification as Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) and Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) as well as Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS)  These programs offer an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the fundamentals of the building industry and certify you as an industry professional.

2008 Education Schedule:

January 25, 2008            NAHB:  Building Codes & Standards (CGB Section 1)

March 28, 2008                NAHB:  Scheduling (CGB Section 3)

April 25, 2008                   Seminar:  The Big Class - TRCC (5 CE hours for TRCC)

May 8, 2008                       Seminar:  Beyond Codes (3 CE hours for TRCC)

June 13th, 2008               NAHB:  Sales & Marketing (CGB Section 4)

November 13-14, 2008   NAHB:  Green Building for Building Professionals (CGB/GMB/CGP Section 1)

Builders Assessment Review

The first step is to take the Builder Assessment Review (BAR). This three-hour, 120-question multiple-choice assessment measures your knowledge in the four core areas of building business and project management.

Curriculum and Other Requirements

  • Two years of building industry experience by graduation
  • Builder Assessment Review (BAR)* and up to nine courses for existing candidates

*Builder Assessment Review (BAR): Beginning in 2003, new candidates are required to take the BAR assessment to determine what courses they must complete to earn the CGB designation. Existing candidates who do not take the BAR must complete nine courses to obtain the designation.

Continuing Education Requirements

Complete 12 hours of continuing education every three years.  At least six hours must be from an NAHB University of Housing course.

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) is an exclusive professional designation designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation.

The CGB designation requires that graduates meet prescribed standards of practice, possess a minimum of two years building industry experience, have a proven track record of successful project management, complete comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program's code of ethics.

Graduate Master Builder                             GMB

HCHBA Members who proudly carry the GMB designation:

The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, you must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, or the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB courses are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals.

Certified Graduate Associate                     CGA

The Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. The CGA is modeled after the Certified Graduate Builder’s comprehensive curriculum of 21, six-hour courses delivered through licensed state and local home builder associations. The CGA designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses, and it is maintained by completing one course annually and paying a $50.00 annual renewal fee. The required courses are: Introduction to Business Management, Customer Service, and Sales & Marketing.
